Community Residents Involvement Day

Posted on 8th September 2010 by

Soho Finger neighbourhood forum organised the Community Residents Involvement Day on the Saturday 21st August 2010. The event was attended by organisations promoting services offered in the community and how residents can get involved.

The event had presentations, workshops and opportunity to gain information and be active members of the community. It was great opportunity to bring the community together.

Below is an image of the Digital Workshop:

Kiran Sahota Vice Chair of Soho Finger Forum explains the purpose of the event:

The resident involvement day was to get residents in the community to become proactive and be aware of all the different organisations in their community trying to help them. It was a day for all residents to have their say about the area that they live in and making organisations aware of the help that they can provide to make it a better place. The day was to help communities and organisations work together and understand the concerns residents have.”

Thank you to everyone who attended the event and Soho Finger Neighbourhood team for organising the event.

Soho Foundation Launch at Soho House

Posted on 11th August 2010 by

Soho Foundation website raised profile with the local community; over community lunch organised by Colin Hanno, the neighbourhood manager for Soho Finger and Gib Heath at the Soho House.

Geoff Henderson of Digital Native Academy presented an overview of the project to the local community who attended the event. Geoff emphasised the aim of the project to work with the community and planning professionals to create a platform for communication; to work together in a co-production approach to regeneration.

It was good to see the community engaged in the debate representing an insightful view. The community members highlighted the importance of being involved in the projects rather than ‘being at the receiving end where things are being done to them’.

The Soho Foundation is a resource which will be for the community and we would like the community to have an active input in the development of the website. Nosheen Kosar, Digital Toolkit Project Manager, in attendance at the event, has been appointed on the project to communicate and make extensive contacts with the local community.

Thank you to everyone who attended the event, Colin for arranging the event and the excellent catering, provided by The Boat House and to the Soho House staff for providing the venue and for making everyone feel welcome.

Play In Park
Having Fun

Over 300 children came to Booth Street Park over the second week of the summer holidays to take part in the Play in Parks project delivered by Birmingham PlayCare Network and funded by Be Birmingham  via Soho Finger and Gib Heath Neighbourhood Management. This was the first time Play in Parks has been delivered in Booth Street Park and was huge hit with the community.

The children have climbed trees, played team games, made dens and even had a barbeque. Many families, fathers and grandparents have visited the park regularly to engage in their children’s play, resulting in some fabulous community engagement.

Happy Days

Here is “A day in the life” diary of one of the playworkers who delivered the Play in Parks project at Booth Street Park.

Before my first day of work I felt a little apprehensive about 2 weeks of working outside in English “summer”, but I enjoy working with children and the community and looked forward to the challenge. I didn’t know what to expect from the training but enjoyed it a lot; BPCN prepared us well but also kept us engaged with the games and feedback. (more…)

Simmer Down Reggae Jamboree: Handsworth Park 2010

Posted on 31st July 2010 by

Simmer Down Reggae Festival took place at Handsworth Park on 17th July and was seen as  a”big family reunion” according to some of my friends  who I grew up with.  It brought back memories of the good old days when we used to have fun in Handsworth park listening to the music of  Steel Pulse and other local talents such as  Macka B and Pato Banton.

I was unable to be there this time because on the same day I was responsible for the coordination of the Party in the Park at Waverhill Park off the Soho Rd, Handsworth.

One of  my lecturers in the art of photography Larrie Tiernan has captured the essence of Simmer Down Reggae Festival . View Larrie’s Flickr account to see images from  Simmer Down Festival, pictures like this one….

Music and dance were some of the great successes at the recent Party in the Park event at Waverhill Park on 17th July.  Despite the early showers the huge turnout were treated to some spectacular entertainment which captured the imagination of party goers of all ages.

DJ Hector entertained the crowd with his own unique fusion of music and dance. Here he is in action!

There was also an opportunity for party goers to play different types of drums as well as get involved in the arts and crafts. Here is one young party goer creating her own beat!

It was good to to see families and the community together enjoying a wonderful event organised by Colin Hanno, residents and key stakeholders. In the  words of Hector (Mr Handsworth) it was truly  ”Unity in the Community”

Benson School -Champions 2010

Soho Games Champions 2010

In the glorious sunshine 180 children from the Soho Ward took part in the 2nd Soho Games – an inter school sports competition that enables children to experience top quality competitive activities including football, athletics,uni-hockey and handball. The Games were organised by a partnership between Ladywood Constituency team/Neighbourhood Management , the local charity Sport 4 Life, and the Soho Links Cluster, and were attended by Benson, Wattville, James Watt, Matthew Boulton, Foundry and St James primary schools.

Benson School were crowned Soho Games Champions, having won the football, athletics and handball competitions. Wattville claimed the runners-up prize, while James Watt came a respectable 3rd. It was not all about winning, however, as all of the children benefitted from improved team-work skills, sense of community, and physical fitness. The children were also inspired by local hero Cash The Flash who presented all of the trophies and medals.
