Soho Games Champions 2010

In the glorious sunshine 180 children from the Soho Ward took part in the 2nd Soho Games – an inter school sports competition that enables children to experience top quality competitive activities including football, athletics,uni-hockey and handball. The Games were organised by a partnership between Ladywood Constituency team/Neighbourhood Management , the local charity Sport 4 Life, and the Soho Links Cluster, and were attended by Benson, Wattville, James Watt, Matthew Boulton, Foundry and St James primary schools.

Benson School were crowned Soho Games Champions, having won the football, athletics and handball competitions. Wattville claimed the runners-up prize, while James Watt came a respectable 3rd. It was not all about winning, however, as all of the children benefitted from improved team-work skills, sense of community, and physical fitness. The children were also inspired by local hero Cash The Flash who presented all of the trophies and medals.

Count down to 2011 Census- Job opportunities

Posted on 26th May 2010 by

The 2011 Census is fast approaching and as neighbourhood Managers we are also  helping to raise awareness. It is good for Birmingham that we get a complete and successful census, because the more people counted the more money the City receives. It is mandatory to complete the questionnaire, failure to do so can lead to a £1000 fine

You can help make the census in Birmingham a success by completing the  census questionnaire and assisting those around you to do likewise. There are residents whose first language isn’t English who may need your help or support from the census team in completing census questionnaire-click on link for more information and contact details   2011 Census. Self Employment

Posted on 26th May 2010 by

A number of residents from different walks of life attended the business start (The BOSS) surgery  at the Summerfield Centre today. The surgery was facilitated by a representative from  Birmingham Chambers of Commerce.

The Boss

Going Self Employed

The surgery was beneficial for some especially those who want to become thier own Boss for the first time. For example, one person commented that she worked for Birmingham City Council for over 20 years and was recently made redundant but  coming to the surgery has given her hope to start up her own business. The Archway of Tears project

Entrance to the Archway of Tears

If you’ve ever been to the City Hospital on the Dudley Road, you may have seen an old, run-down building in the car park. It looks a bit unloved, but has a remarkable and very interesting history.

The Archway of Tears was where Birmingham’s poor would come to be assessed for entry to the workhouse – its evocative name a reflection of the misery these people had experienced.

I went down today with Andrew to have a look at the building, because we’re now looking to start a process that will hopefully lead to its redevelopment for use by our community.

At the moment, we’re just at the stage where we’re assessing what can be done with the building and the cost of renovating what is a very dilapidated structure. As part of that it’s really important to get as many people from the Winson Green, Brookfield and West Summerfield area to be involved in the project.

Here I explain a bit about what we’re doing:
[youtube:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cYvSq5HJyL0]

We want to find out what people would like the building to be used for, but also to learn more about its history. The Birmingham Conservation Trust is looking for funding and leading the project, but I hope we can help to support the work it is doing.

If you’ve got any ideas or information about the site please tell us! You can commment on this post or contact us.

A local historian, Ted Rudge, has written about the Archway of Tears, here and here. There’s more about the workhouse on this institutions.org.uk site.
